ULISES I

It is a nanosatellite to be sent into space conceptualized as a contemporary art piece.

The idea of launching a satellite into Earth´s orbit starts in 2010 from a conscious exercise of changing reality. México is involved in a "drugs war", a reality that has left over 50,000 civilians dead. As a civilian mission, launching a satellite into Earth's orbit is a dramatic decision in a dramatic time, the objective is to prove that a reality of any Mexican or to extend the point, the reality of any person in the World can be changed if they learn to think of a better future. There is an essential need the learning of how to approach a vision of a future.

Poetry, from the root poeisis is a term used by many in relationship to the nature of the creative process, Cornelius Castoradis referred to it as the action of creation from a philosophical point of view, Heidegger underlines the moment of pleasure produced when something is away from its original position to become something else. In Greek, poiesis, has to do with the action that gives transformation and continuity to the World.

One of the basic proposals of the project is the need to think as a collective, so a group was formed to give the art form to Ulises I. The name of this team is The Mexican Space Collective. Founded one year before the Mexican Space Agency was formed. The team is made of several artists and engineers, they are technology artists, composers, poets, engineers, cultural promoters and sound artists. Mainly the collective is in charge of the artistic content of this satellite. The Mexican Space Collective is taking the term opera as its original concept, a hybrid. In the XVI century opera started adding music to Greek theater, making it easier to be watched by the Italian royalty.

For the 21st century we are using the term opera as a new hybrid, with the new elements of our times, we are mixing technology, science and art into one concept.

Ulises by its own process is an example of a genuine attempt of discourse for a possible future. Mcluhan used to say, you can not drive a car forward only looking through the back mirror.

The concept behind this particular artwork is replacing the piece of art for its process. The process is what is important, not the final piece. Ulises is meant as an inspiration trigger. It has to do with the world of imagination and fiction. Revisiting the concept of Duchamp, the object of art is not the object of art, it is the center of discussion.

Ulises the first is a project to be read and read again. Ulises approaches technology as a way of thinking, where the limits of technology today are the limits of our own imagination. With imagination, everything is possible. Our mission is to imagine the future.
